Is a discipline associated with the control of generation, storage, collection, transfer and transport, processing and disposal of solid waste in a manner that is in accordance with the best principle of public health, economic, engineering, conservation, aesthetic, public attitude and environment.

There is 6 functional elements :

1) Waste generation
2) Waste handling and separation, storage and processing at source
3) Collection
4) Separation and processing and transformation of solid waste
5) Transfer and transport

IWhen all the functional element have been evaluated for use, and all of the interfaces and connection between elements have been matched for effectiveness and economy, the community has developed an integrated waste management system

A hierarchy in waste management can be used to rank action to implement programs within the community

Waste reduction

Source reduction is first in the hierarchy because it is the most effective way to reduce the quantity of the waste, the cost associated with its waste handling, and its environmental impact

Recycling involves:

  • Separation and collection of waste materials
  • Preparation of re-use, reprocessing, and re-manufacture
  • The re-use, reprocessing, and re-manufacture processes
  • Recycling is an important factor in helping to reduce demand on resources and the amount of waste requiring disposal by landfilling.

    Waste transformation

  • Involves the physical, chemical or biological alteration of waste to:
  • Improve the efficiency of solid waste management operations and system
  • Recover reusable and recyclable materials
  • Recover combustion products and energy in forms of heat and combustible biogas


  • The solid waste that can not be recycled and are of no further use
  • The residual matters remaining after solid waste have been separated at a material recovery facilities
  • The residual matter remaining after recovery of conversion products or energy.
